Ruth Cracknell, beloved Australian star of stage and screen, was born on July 6, 1925, and is perhaps best known for her role in ‘Mother and Son’. Premiering in 1984 and written by Geoffrey Atherden (fresh off his success as a writer for ‘The Aunty Jack Show’), ‘Mother and Son’ ran for ten years on ABC television and provided Cracknell with one of her most enduring roles, that of the eccentric yet lovable Maggie Beare. In this clip from the series' 5th season, Arthur (Garry McDonald) wants to spend a quiet Saturday morning at home reading the paper while he drinks a cup of tea. Suddenly, there’s a knock on the door, and Maggie is accused of stealing a clock from the house open for inspection across the road.
